Industrial gases are also referred to as bulk gases or commodity gases; they are produced in relatively large quantities by companies for use in a variety of industrial manufacturing processes. The industrial gas industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing industrial organic and inorganic gases in compressed, liquid, and solid forms.

The top five companies covered are Linde Group, L'Air Liquide S.A, Air Products and Chemicals Inc., Taio Nippon Sanso Group and Praxair. Linde AG was the largest company in the industrial gas market in 2017.

The countries covered are USA, China, Germany, Brazil, Japan, UK, Spain, Russia, France, Australia, Italy, India and rest of the world.

The global industrial gas market was valued at around $52 billion in 2017. Asia Pacific was the largest region in the industrial gas market in 2017, accounting for above 39% market share. China was the largest country in the market in 2017, accounting for above 20% market share.

Cars powered by hydrogen gas are being produced by some automobile manufacturers driving demand for this industrial gas. These cars produce lower emissions than traditional vehicles, as the only emission from the car is water either in the form of water vapour or droplets there are no emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen or particulates. Consumers’ preference for alternative fuel vehicles is driving the demand for hydrogen powered vehicles and hydrogen gas.

The industrial gas market is segmented into Hydrogen, Helium, Argon, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, Oxygen and Acetylene. Hydrogen is an active agent in oil refineries and an important ingredient in a range of other industries including chemical production, metal refining, food processing and electronics manufacturing Helium is usually produced as a by-product to natural gas processing and is commonly used in the automotive and semi-conductor industries. Argon is manufactured industrially through fractional distillation of liquid air. Carbon Dioxide is used widely in the food industry for applications such as removing the caffeine from coffee beans to make decaffeinated coffee and for carbonating beer, soft drinks etc. It is also used for cooling in food and manufacturing industries. Nitrogen has two main uses- for cooling and as an inert atmosphere. Liquid nitrogen is used for cooling in many industrial processes and in the food industry. Gaseous nitrogen it is used to form an inert blanket over substances that would otherwise be oxidized by the air. Oxygen is used by steel mills to oxidize unwanted impurities in the steel. Other uses are is in the food industry, for medical oxygen for respiration and in oxy-acetylene torches. Acetylene is mainly used in oxy-acetylene flames for cutting mild steel and for welding.
